George Matcham's father George by Gilbert Stuart [various art websites and ThePeerage.com]

George Nelson Matcham drawn in 1828 from National Trust Collections.org.uk
From the Stourhead Collection, artist Stephen Catterson Smith the elder (Skipton 1806 – Dublin 1872)

George Nelson Matcham married Harriet Eyre of Newhouse in 1817 (daughter of William Eyre) The Peerage.

This page contains a full copy of Matcham's book "Hundred of Frustfield" in Sir Richard Colt Hoare's History of Modern Wiltshire, published in 1844. Sir Richard (the fourth owner of Stourhead) died in 1838 and patronage was continued by his brother Henry Merrick to complete the volume.

Matcham's book has been reconstructed here from two sources. The first is a photocopy of all the pages covering Whiteparish (to page 80) plus the two end pages, taken from the bound Church copy and loaned by Marion Clutterbuck, vicar at the time. The second source is an unbound print of the full book, but missing some pages, chiefly those located in between the numbered pages and showing pedigrees and engravings. This copy was lent by Patricia Boyle, who as Pat Keeley was the wife of the Rev. Roger Keeley, vicar of Whiteparish from 1957 to 1987.

Some of the pages in the bound and unbound copies are not in the same order, but it appears that there are pages out of order in both copies. Here I have re-ordered the pages according to the contents list in the book.

I've copied a number of sections of the book into web pages for ease of access and searching:

In the contents list below the numbers are the page numbers printed in the book. At one point a number of extra pages have been inserted before printing, with pages 28* to 34* coming between pages 28 and 29. Some family pedigrees are on double size fold-out pages inserted between two numbered pages, and some single pages with engravings have also been inserted between numbered pages. From page 81 I've used A4 scans of the pages, so have omitted the page heading including page number on some sheets to fit onto the page - all other detail is shown.
