Balsdean - Woodingdean - Westbourne - Whiteparish - Romsey

A structural history of the lost hamlet of Balsdean in Sussex and the parish of Whiteparish in Wiltshire. Further Sussex material covers selected aspects of the development of Woodingdean and Westbourne, and a new section is being prepared covering selected topics in Romsey. Click on the links below to reach each section.

Balsdean - the history of a lost mediaeval settlement, based on a book written by the author in 1970 that has been revised and updated most recently in 2018. Includes 50 years of research and photographs.

Woodingdean - a set of old postcard views, each accompanied by a sequence of matching photos taken at intervals by the author from 1970 to 2018 together with personal memories of its development since 1959.

Whiteparish - a parish in the southwest corner of Wiltshire that features a village, hamlets, farms, a church and ruined chapel, a local shop and a number of businesses, grand houses and their parkland. The complex history of four Tithings and eight Manors unscrambled through 35 years of research.

Each part of this website can be read as a book by using the "continue" button at the foot of each page, or browsed at random using the contents panel to the left.

While the whole website is ready to upload, checking of each individual page will limit the rate at which this can be achieved. The Whiteparish section alone has over 500 pages and several hundred photographs to be checked, with Balsdean, Woodingdean and Westbourne smaller but still substantial tasks. This is inevitably going to take a while to complete, so please return from time to time to view new material as it appears.
